TBM Rescue Technology in Dongshan Water Supply Tunnel No. 9

The Dongshan Water Supply Project is a key initiative of Shanxi Province's 12th Five-Year Plan. Tunnel No. 9 was constructed using a double-shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine). While traversing the water-rich sandy cobble stratum in the Dongyu Gully, the TBM encountered severe water and sand inrushes, leading to cutterhead jamming and halting excavation. Conventional rescue methods proved ineffective. However, by adopting advanced chemical grouting technology tailored to the water-sand inflow and geological conditions, the engineering challenge was resolved quickly and efficiently. This targeted approach demonstrates significant applicability for rapid TBM rescue under complex conditions, offering valuable insights for similar projects.
